Illuminated flat face, built-up copper letters at Scarborough’s Art Gallery

Blue Raptor created and installed the first illuminated signage at Scarborough’s Art Gallery.

The traditional type faced letters with LED halo illumination, were created in flat faced, built-up copper and intentionally left uncoated to speed up the oxidisation process of the metal and trigger the formation of verdigris. This natural blue-green patina, which will deepen and intensify with time, is designed to reflect the ageing process of metals used in artistic sculpture and for national monuments.

Planning permission had to be obtained before we installed the letters on the Grade II listed building, to ensure the letters were in keeping with the architectural character of the historic building.
